Before you begin: choose a stopping point. Five minutes, five objects, or one small surface are all enough.
1. Make the space safer
Start with anything you could trip over, spill, or step on. Put those items somewhere stable. This is useful progress even if you stop here.
2. Remove obvious rubbish
Take one bag and collect only items you are certain are rubbish. Skip anything that requires a decision.
3. Gather dishes in one place
Bring cups and plates to the kitchen or place them together near the door. You do not have to wash them during this reset.
4. Clear one useful surface
Choose the part of a table, chair, or counter that would help you most today. Move unrelated objects into a temporary basket instead of organizing every item.
5. Stop deliberately
Notice what changed. Tie the rubbish bag, put the basket somewhere visible, and decide whether you want another short round. Stopping at the planned point is success—not giving up.
Make the reset fit you
- Sit while sorting if standing takes too much energy.
- Use gloves or headphones when textures or sounds are difficult.
- Choose three objects instead of five minutes when timers add pressure.
- Ask somebody to stay on a call while you work.
