What body doubling means here
Two people agree to work at the same time, in person or on a call. The other person is not supervising or judging the cleaning. Their presence simply provides structure and a shared beginning.
A simple 25-minute session
- Check in for two minutes: each person names one realistic goal.
- Prepare: gather the bag, basket, cloth, or other supplies needed for that goal.
- Work for 15 minutes: keep the call open or remain in the same room. Conversation is optional.
- Pause for three minutes: share what changed and adjust the task if needed.
- Work for five more minutes: finish a small loop, such as taking the rubbish out or returning supplies.
Helpful agreements
- No apologies for the state of the room.
- No unsolicited advice or pressure to continue.
- Cameras are optional during remote sessions.
- Either person may shorten or stop the session.
- Progress is described, not graded.
Try saying: “I’m going to clear the chair for 15 minutes. I don’t need advice, but it helps to know you’re there.”
If you do not have a partner
A quiet co-working video, a familiar podcast, or Tidy Buddy's co-work timer can provide some of the same external structure. Choose the option that feels supportive rather than distracting.
